The key to more jolly air travel this December and January is planning ahead. Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA) shares tips for travel planning, packing, and more.
- Expect the unexpected when traveling during the holidays. Delays across the air system due to wintry weather and volume are possible. Download your airline's mobile app to access your latest flight status, view other flight options, track your checked bags, and navigate connections.
- Give yourself plenty of time at the airport. We recommend at least two hours to locate parking, check bags, go through the security checkpoint, and grab a snack or reading material.
- Familiarize yourself with the parking options at ROA. Economy Parking (located across Aviation Drive) is a daily maximum rate of $8. Standard Parking (the rear portions of the lots in front of the Terminal) is a daily maximum rate of $12. Preferred Parking (the front portions of the lots in front of the Terminal closest to the crosswalks) is a daily maximum rate of $16. With holiday crowds, your first choice of parking may not be available. Please follow all signage for lot availability. The parking team is here to answer questions at 540-362-0630.
- Access TSA's holiday packing resources to reduce delays at the checkpoint. If traveling with gifts, TSA recommends keeping these items unwrapped in the instance officers need to inspect them. Cookies, cakes, and pies are welcome in carry-on and checked bags, but pay attention to the 3.4-ounce liquid and gel rule when carrying on other holiday treats.
- Avoid idling at the curbs in front of the Terminal if picking up a passenger. Instead, have them give you a call when they have collected their bags. The first 30 minutes of parking is free in all airport lots. Never leave your vehicle unattended in front of the Terminal.
- Consider giving the gift of travel experiences (and accessories) this holiday season. Airline gift cards, concert and sporting tickets, and accessories like air tags and brightly colored luggage straps and tags make for fun gifts.
