Roanoke-Blacksburg airport bids for grant to add Dallas or Denver
Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport has applied for a federal grant to expand its “insufficient” flight schedule.
The 21-page application explains the airport’s primary service area “experiences a combination of insufficient access to key population and business centers throughout the U.S. and disproportionately high airfares.” Roanoke Times 7.30.15

Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport Receives Perfect Safety Rating
The Federal Aviation Administration recently conducted its annual airfield safety inspection at the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport. The FAA’s airport certification and safety inspector found zero violations and commended airport staff for effective day-to-day operations. The FAA inspection reviews an airport’s compliance with Federal Aviation Regulation Part 139 which includes airfield operations, pavement and signage, lighting, markings, inspection reports, fueling operations, and emergency response and preparedness. “Build it and they will come” — This old and over-used phrase from the movie “Field of Dreams” best exemplifies the beliefs that have been held by most airport operators regarding air service in the past. However, recent events such as airline consolidation and the financial recession of 2008 have changed the way airlines operate. The result is fewer choices and opportunities for air service.
