ROA preparing for winter weather event

Roanoke-Blacksburg Airport is closely monitoring the anticipated winter weather via multiple meteorology sources.

Our goal is to make sure the Airport remains open to support airline and general aviation operations while keeping the safety of employees and passengers top priority.

For passengers:

  • Passengers should continue to monitor their flight status with their airline
  • Some airlines may put travel advisories in place where passengers can adjust their flight itineraries free of charge
  • Check road conditions before leaving home and give yourself plenty of time to get to ROA
  • Take care while walking through parking lots and along walkways
  • Follow ROA's Facebook for potential operational updates related to parking, walkways, and other impacts
  • Pack a winter emergency car kit: https://www.vaemergency.gov/media-assets/winter-weather-emergency-car-kit

Pre-winter event – airport and airport partners are ensuring:

  • Trucks, equipment, and supplies are staged, topped with fuel, and ready to go – for the airfield and terminal
  • Snow operators receive necessary refresher training
  • The Airport Commission gathers airport tenants for a pre-storm coordination meeting
  • Snow teams are on-call and ready to report
  • Roads, parking lots, and sidewalks are pre-treated

During a winter weather event:

  • Snow teams are on-call and ready to report
  • Airport snow teams work 24/7 during snow events to keep runways, taxiways, aprons, roadways, and walkways clear
  • Runways, parking lots, and sidewalks are treated and cleared on an ongoing basis
  • Airport teams continually monitor runway conditions and update reports so pilots have the most current conditions
