ROA-United #4339 Updates

The latest ROA-related updates regarding United #4339 can be found on the Roanoke-Blacksburg Airport Facebook page. All passengers should continue to check with their airline for the most current flight status.


On Sept. 24 at approximately 9:18 p.m., Roanoke-Blacksburg Airport (ROA) and Roanoke City Public Safety teams actively responded to a commercial regional jet situated on the engineered material arresting system (EMAS) on the end of runway 16-34.

No injuries were reported. All runways were immediately closed.

It was determined the flight was United #4339 (ERJ-145 operated by CommuteAir) originating from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).

Passengers were transported to the terminal. Virginia State Police arrived on site to conduct the investigation in close coordination with the NTSB. The investigation remains ongoing.

Concurrently, a resource center was established in the terminal for passengers and their families staffed by airline and airport personnel.

Sept. 25

At approximately 12:10 a.m. on Sept. 25, runway 6-24 was reopened to arrivals and departures. Runway 16-34 will remain closed to support the investigation and future EMAS evaluation and repairs.

As of 8 a.m., multiple flight delays are ongoing. Passengers should check with their airline for the most current flight status.

United #4339 passengers should contact United regarding baggage and other inquiries.
